PROJECT: TRADITIONS

Artist Statement:

Traditions: “Legacy of Pride,”* as with many of my endeavors, began as a sort of fun, if not kitschy project called “Spaghetti Western” but revealed itself as so much more.  Rather than the fun glance at rodeo queens and bucking broncos that I had intended, the deeply-rooted traditions of family, self-reliance and integrity became more and more prevalent in the images.  Hence, “Legacy of Pride” has evolved.

As Americans living in a politically-divided modern environment, overrun with web and HD images of conflict, confusion, judgment and in some cases, fear… we seldom have the time to sit back and experience the tactile aspects of creation and time-honored tradition. An overlooked task such as making a custom rope to sort a calf on the range, tie him down and lance an abscess that has the calf’s comfort and eyesight compromised… These are the traditions.  The rope makers.  The wild horse tamers.  The leather craftsmen.  And the children to whom those skills are passed, along with the ranches and farms themselves.  These roots run deep.  There is an overwhelming sense of pride and love, even in the most modest of ranch households.  There is satisfaction, purpose and honor in tradition… one that inspires respect.

The life of purpose and definition yields a sense of stability and calm, free from the perils of modern society: ADD, OCD and other such increasingly-prevalent afflictions whose origins have yet to be unearthed.  The responsibility of passing a long-journeyed torch is an unspoken commitment, and one that comes with the inner peace that only direction can offer.  Am I preaching about “the simple life?” No.  I am simply stating that the deep roots of tradition and purpose can be seen and felt, like a 100-year-old oak tree that stands proud and sure, even in a wind storm.  The oak knows nothing of the issues of the world, but stands firmly on the foundation of its own whispered history.  It remains the same, regardless of politics, foreign wars, genetically-modified seeds, feed lots, mass-production and tainted resources.  How long can tradition remain evolution-proof?  One can’t tell.  But I invite you to consider the power of a traditional past, even in the face of an alternative and ever-changing industrial world.
